DJ CHARLY'S LOVERS ROCK
DJ Charly first heard African Rumba and soukous music when he was travelling around Africa and arrived in Zaire (now the DRC) in 1981-2. That music opened his ears to that magnificent joyful music and he learnt as much as he could and searches for it still.... The French speaking capitals like Paris and Brussels were the big European centres for communities from the Congo region, there was almost nothing in London apart from Sterns and the Africa Club in Covent garden.. He loves African rhythm and will play it as often as he can. Here in Hackney he used to go to every blues dance he could get into around Hackney, all those all night reggae parties, often being the only “English” geezer in the house and dealt with quite a lot of “resistance” for the love of Lovers Rock and Deep Reggae. There was the direct connection between London and the Caribbean that gave us a rich vein of music often produced in and around Kensal Green and Willesden. There is an irresistible groove in the music that stays with you forever. He became fascinated by Cuban and Latin music when he started to get into Columbian and Cuban Salsa, although the Clave will always be a challenge for English people. Disco, Soul, R&B, Ann Peebles, Curtis and all those magnificent musicians have left us a huge archive of magnificent music. These fabulous musicians put their lives and hearts into their music and left us recordings of love, lost, stolen, regained, given and hidden. This is the music DJ Charly loves and wants to share with you.
